A step in the right direction…

As part of their GDC (Game Developers Conference) presentation, Nintendo officially launched the Wii System Menu 4.0 update. The good news is that the console now supports running WiiWare off of an SD card and even new support for SDHC cards up to 32GB.

I was quite glad to see this progress because my biggest beef with the Wii before was the VERY limited onboard space and having to delete and reinstall channels just because I was running low on space between virtual console and WiiWare. This is still a far from perfect solution but it’s nice to see Nintendo taking atleast some action to this perdicament. I mean, if you’re going to keep offering all these WiiWare, virtual console, and add-on channel titles, maybe offer us atleast some sort of small hard drive (even if just optional). It wouldn’t effect console price much really and it would help out ALOT. But I digress…

gdcwiisdmenu

The downside? (for those homebrew enabled)

With the latest update Nintendo has officially put a stop to the Twilight Hack for the Homebrew Channel. According to wiibrew.com, it is possible to run the channel from an SD card but the Homebrew Channel cannot be installed back on the Wii.

So homebrewers out there, don’t update your consoles just yet…

“You’re just one of Umbrella’s leftovers…” (RE 5 End Game)

Filed under: World of Video Gaming — Tags: — DGM-payne @ 11:10 pm

Again, Resident Evil 5 SPOILER WARNING. You’ve been warned…

I actually first finished RE 5 Wednesday last week, but I’ve been doing some of stuff since. I’ll start from the Wesker and Jill battle since that’s about where I left off from last time…

The robed figure in high heels is revealed, enter Jill. I was a little confused about the blond hair at first but apparently it was a result of some of the experimenting while she was in captivity by Wesker (according to one of the files). Anyways, the first part of this battle was dealing with Wesker while the brainwashed Jill gets in the way every once in awhile (and tries to gun you down). You get 7 minutes to damage him as much as you can, damage him a set amount before he leaves and you get a bonus. Not too hard as long as you have a (human) partner to collaberate with and some decently upgraded weapons (may I recommend a magnum?). My cousin and I managed to damage him enough and progressed into the next part. Wesker leaves and the next target becomes apparent, removing the control device from Jill without killing her. I don’t know what it was but this part seemed obscenely long when we were playing together. What you have to do is have Chris talk to Jill to stun her and 1 person restrains while the other pulls the device by rapidly tapping. Doesn’t seem too bad, right? Only we had to do this a crazy amount of times. It made me feel even crappier about my ability to rapidly tap (which was pretty bad to begin with). Listening to Chris say the same 3 or 4 things over and over again wasn’t too much fun either. Eventually we noticed that it was sparking quite a bit, which was a good sign, and pushed on until the end.

Whew…

Later I had to replay this chapter again because I didn’t receive the chapter achievement, which happened a couple times throughout the game (I guess as a result of joining my cousin’s game), but not biggie really. I noticed a couple things different here on single player though. First of all, let me recommend that if you’re playing it on single DO NOT send AI Sheva on the upper path of the licker room before the Wesker/Jill battle. I tried this the first time and she ran ahead which sent a crazy wave of lickers at both of us. Leave her on the ground to cover you, it’s much easier. As far as the Wesker battle goes, I didn’t have much luck damaging him enough. AI Sheva decided that she would focus on distracting Jill rather than helping me with Wesker. This time I just waited for the timer to run out. Luckily, the Jill part was much easier this time around. I beileve I had the device off in less than 10 tries of pulling. AI Sheva didn’t even do much other than restraining. Maybe this part is just plain easier on single player? Can’t tell excatly yet, but it was alot shorter than co-op.

Next part (and final major portion of the game), the cargo ship!

Jill Sandwich (the RE5 journey begins…)

Filed under: World of Video Gaming — Tags: — DGM-payne @ 9:46 pm

First thing’s first, this post may contain spoilers to the Resident Evil 5 plot. So only read on if you don’t care or you’ve already finished the game (or completed until atleast 5-3, like me). I also promise to stop using sandwich in my post titles.

Let’s begin the operation! (sorry, I had to)

I actually started the game on Sunday, but you know me with the late posts. Anyways, I’ve played through most of the game so far with my cousin over Live co-op and we’ll continue more today. The other day when we hit that flashback where Chris and Jill confront Wesker (even more bad ass than ever, by the way)  in that mansion/castle/whatever I mentioned something. When Jill went flying out the window with Wesker I thought to myself, atleast she didn’t become a Jill Sandwich as Barry Burton so “cleverly” put it in the first game. It was a good larf indeed…

Being as far as we’ve gotten  thus far in the game, I think I can safely judge that not only is Resident Evil 5 a fantastic game in the series but also one of the BEST co-op experiences I’ve had in quite awhile. I haven’t had this much fun in co-op gameplay since the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance (and you can bet I’m hella excited for the sequel to that). Teamwork is essential here. Whether it’s bosses that require the collaberation of 2 people, swapping items between partners (you will be doing this considering the conservative carrying space), driver and gunner teamwork, or a slew of split up or work together puzzles…RE5 has plenty of it all. There are also parts were you can royally screw over your partner, including but not limited to: a bridge that one person cranks up while the other crosses (hoping that it doesn’t release), a raft that one person rides while the other cranks it over crocodile infested waters (and getting chomped at), and a crazy ass laser puzzle room (you might’ve seen something like this in another game). Ain’t partnership a beautiful thing?

Anyways,  I’d like to go a bit more into that crazy ass laser puzzle room since it posed a bit of trouble for us. Sure, the big room with 4 hallways of mirror reflected sun beams of death should’ve seemed like enough…but no. The next part was a series of 3 rooms of rotating mirrors to get the beam from point A to point B, each one deadlier than the last. Oh, and the beam will kill you instantly if you touch it at all. This was hands down our first area of most deaths in the game. FYI, try to make sure your partner is clear of the beam before you rotate it AND try not to rotate yourself into the beam. Needless to say it can end up a bit of a mess with retrys if you’re not extremely careful. Hehe…

All in all, it’s been quite an entertaining journey so far. Check back tomorrow for part 2 of the insanity.

Lastly, I hope you all had a good St. Patrick’s day, the day when everyone’s Irish…and corned beef and cabbage rocks.

I could really go for a Sim Sandwich right about now… (or something equivalent)

Here’s the other half…
So around this time in late February is when Dawn of War 2 came out (Hooray!). I had preordered it at best buy but it became backordered and I had to wait a little extra to get mine. When I did finally get it at the very end of the month I was raring to go. It’s an all around great campaign, a bit more squad based and micro managing in an RTS than I’m used to (coming from a massively C&C background) but it’s easy to adapt to. I hear the co-op is pretty bitchin as well (haven’t personally tried it yet unfortunately). It sure as hell beats the cold that I was coming down with around the same time. Luckily it cleared up before I had to go for jury duty on the 4th, but as I had explained to my cousin that day was completely uneventful anyways.

Here’s how my jury duty went down…
Got there about 9am, filled out a couple forms, watched a dumb introduction to petit jury video then some CNN, then after being there for about an hour and a half got called into a backroom with about 20 people where they told us we were no longer needed because the trial they called in extra people for was settled out of court and I was free to go. Didn’t have to sit on a jury and now I’m set for another 6 or 8 years.
Haha…pretty pointless, right? I think I still get the $40 though.

What else happened…
Oh, my mom finally got her new washer after that extremely unfortunate incident from around christmas time. Good news is that insurance covered it AND I don’t have to help lug our clothes over to my grandma’s house every weekend. YAY! Helped my brother and mom put the washer and dryer up on cinder blocks. Next step is looking for a sump pump. There was never a problem with the old washer and dryer during flooding, but I guess there’s just something about the way they make the new ones that can’t take a little bit of water creeping up. Go figure.

We should probably talk about games again…no?
I already talked about Dawn of War 2 earlier, but my other pick for last month would be the Lost and Damned expansion for GTA 4. Back when I first got GTA 4 I didn’t have much of a choice on format since I didn’t have a PS3 yet, but now I’m glad I got the 360 version. TLAD added a decent amount and variety of missions that run parallel and intertwine with Niko’s story, new weapons and vehicles, and a gang war/bike race here and there. Easily 10-20 hours (more if you count online play) of added content for a decent price.

Speaking of good prices though, I got the Simpsons game for the 360 this week for only $8. This game is a goldmine of video game references and even often EA poking fun at themselves as well (or the video game industry at all for that matter). The comic book guy even has you collecting video game cliches along the way, such as exploding barrels, double jumps, etc. I could go on and on about the different kinds of references, but for example in the “Enter the Cheatrix” level where you spend your time in a literal game engine with miserable looking Sonic-ish and Mario-ish characters slaving away, as well as noticing the Doom door opening sound coming from a moving platform is a beautiful thing. The Sim Sandwich part of the title came from a level with Will Wright in it. The cutscenes throughout the game are even brand new cartoon footage (claimed to be over 30min total). Sure, alot of voices are recycled from the show but I really don’t mind at all (and this is coming from someone who grew up with the show). The game is just plain visually beautiful too. The camera is a bit quirky, which is probably this game’s biggest downfall (besides only offline co-op and no other multiplayer), but it still doesn’t take away too much from the game. I’ve had alot more fun with it than I had expected for a game this cheap and I highly recommend it to anyone who is even remotely interested. Here’s the Newegg link to the $8 price with free shipping (still $8 at the time of this posting, saw it go up to $10 once but then it went back down again).

WHEW…

That brings us to one last thing:

re5-partners-helicopter

The game that I’ve been waiting for years now and watching countless trailers for is finally officially out NOW. My copy of RE 5 collector’s shipped wednesday and I’m just hoping to get it SOONer than later. After watching the last couple of trailers and witnessing the ever increasing bad-assitude of Wesker I nearly crapped myself. This is a glorious friday the 13th. I’ll have more when I actually obtain it.

One last thing, I was going to post this yesterday but apparently it was a bit too windy day and our power went out for a good chunk of the night.

Ugh…

It’s always something, isn’t it?

P.S. – The DGM forums are back up now since I finally dug up the index file I required, go ahead for a stay if you please.

Evangelion quote FTW.

Anyways, I know the last post was kind of random but I was just waiting to segway into this tell all post about the events since the downtime. Oh, remember last post when I said I was going to do a February games of the month post? Yeah, that kinda got shot to hell when my host had me offline for nearly a week mid-month. Here’s that story…

Flashback to the 15th, my site had already been offline for a couple days on a “This account has been suspended” page, and I submitted my first support ticket. Almost immediately my ticket was forwarded to another department of support (which was probably I’ve EVER had with them). BUT I waited another 2 days on this support ticket and no new responses or answers. Of course Live Chat support has been offline since these douchebags took over, so then started I started another support ticket in hopes of SOMETHING, ANYTHING. After another day (this was the 19th by now), FINALLY my prayers were answered when someone from engineering responded and reactivated my account. This is what he said:

“Your site was apparently auto suspended due to suspicious activity. I reactived the account, however you will need to go through your web files to make sure nothing is wrong or malicious.”

I was rather confused, as something like had never happened before, so I asked him what exactly could have caused something like this. He responded again (rather quickly compared to their support in general, +2 for engineering):

“Either a excessive usage or malicious file. If it occurs again, I will make a note of what was occuring and let you know.”

Well OK, that didn’t help me too much. Let’s just hope that never happens again before my current subscription expires, m’kay?
This was a wake up call more than ever that I MUST switch hosts when the next opportunity comes up.

I’ve got more recapping to do, but I’ll save it for the next post SOON…
