Early Heavy Rain Demo

That highly anticipated Playstation 3 title (even featured on our list *wink, wink*), Heavy Rain, is due out on the 23rd and a demo is officially releasing the 11th. Why wait until then when you can try it out now? Well, starting yesterday there’s a website that’ll let you do just that.

All you have to do is sign-up for an account and play a little detective game here - Precinct 52

A good fellow at Kotaku has even posted the answers to make things even easier :

• Short cigarette (117b)
• Origami bird
• Coffee shop C (it says “diner”)
• 117h (tyre tracks).

Enter those 4 into the evidence folder and given you did it correctly you should recieve a code to redeem on your PSN account.

Those links above are for US playstation accounts. (For our UK buddies : Sign-up , Precinct 52 )

Happy hunting!

I’m downloading my copy right now as well…

Happy Groundhog’s day! (aka sorry for another couple weeks of no posts)

For the record, I had been (for the most part) enthralled in the epicness of Fallout 3 for the better part of January as the game of the year edition was part of my christmas presents. About 121 hours of exploring and conquering later I was done with all the quests of the main game…BUT I haven’t tapped into the add-ons yet (other than getting over level 20 as part of Broken Steel). For the moment though I’m going back Assassin’s Creed 2, which I briefly started after christmas but hadn’t even played past the first sequence before moving into Fallout 3 among other things.

Second, last week I also made a pretty good killing with some cheap DVDs. The FYE location near here (which also used to be a Media Play before they closed down) is closing their doors soon and they were up to 50% off now. What better time than now to peruse their used sections, no? I did just that and found a nice load of movies/TV most as low as $3 or $4. You’d be surprised what you find sometimes at Big Lots too if you don’t mind digging through their $3 new DVD sections or even Best Buy with their different $5 DVDs every week. Blu-ray is gaining more and more influence but I’m still fine with DVDs thanks, so stop pushing them on me.

Lastly, I’d like to note that Zombieland hit DVD/Blu-ray release today. To anyone who hasn’t seen it yet I would have to say that it was a quite the good balance of humor and zombie killing (and I’m not just saying that because I love zombie stuff…or maybe I am). It also has quite possibly the best Bill Murray cameo of all time. There’s a standard single disc available everywhere and an exclusive “Nut up or shut up” 2 disc edition at Best Buy. Either way you’ll get relatively the same experience plus or minus 2 additional featurettes. Pick it up and you won’t regret it.

P.S. – Only a couple more weeks until the Resident Evil 5 add-on. Can’t wait…

4 / / Itchy. Tasty. (aka generic Resident Evil title)

Oh man, with the first Resident Evil 5 add-on only a month away now I’m starting to get pretty excited. Chris and Jill will be taking on Spencer’s mansion (which, if you’ve seen any of the trailers so far, looks to have many a similarity to the mansion in the first game…plus a crazy new monster) in Lost in Nightmares DLC which will be hitting 360 and PS3 marketplaces on February 17th and 18th respectively (along with the first new costume pack as well). Following shortly behind those is the second add-on with Josh and Jill (also shown in the new trailers) on March 3rd and 4th (with the second costume pack).

More great news for those who don’t have Resident Evil 5 yet is that a “Gold edition” will be hitting stores on March 9th with the whole package of game and add-ons for both PS3 and 360 for $50. No excuses anymore, guys…

For full details, Capcom Unity Blog has more info.

I’ve been playing through Resident Evil 5 again the last couple days (in preparation, if you’d like) to freshen up before the add-ons get here. Not much longer now.

Animal Crossing : Then and Now

Now that I have a good year of City Folk under my belt I can safely say that there’s plenty of new additions in the latest Animal Crossing game that kept me playing this long…but there’s also a few changes that quite annoy me. Let’s start with the best (in my opinion) of the newest additions to the series…

  1. DLC from Nintendo - Now here’s something I thought was a fantastic idea. Getting periodic gift items from Nintendo helps keep the game alive, no? Connect your town to the wifi and watch out for those letters from Nintendo with your holiday gifts (check out the sick snowman helmet in the picture :D ). Speaking of wifi, that leads into my next point of interest…
  2. Wifi connection to other towns - There was a little bit of this in the DS version but now it’s easier than ever to stop by any other town. Connect your wifi, exchange friend codes and then you’re done! This also helps keep things alive and more interesting than the original game could achieve. Also (somewhat) connected to this is…
  3. The City - In addition to the town gate that’ll lead you to other towns there’s the bus stop, which will take you over to the city. This is a nice addition but it’s little more than a marketplace, containing a few shops, the happy room academy, auction house and fortune teller. It’s a nice step but I think they could have done more with it.

Those are all pretty great additions to the series, but there’s a few things as well that just make me ask…why?

  1. Deteriorating grass - This is probably my biggest peeve about the game. Running over areas of grass will cause the ground to change into dirt, it doesn’t take alot of running either. This wouldn’t be too much of a problem if the grass grew back faster…but it doesn’t. The constant grass of the original is actually something I miss now. Since the leaves, snow, etc. of the different seasons only shows up on the areas of grass then your town will look like a pretty patchy mess (see the picture for example) until your grass finally manages to grow back. Ugh…
  2. Watering flowers – This is also a bit connected to the last point. Like the grass in the first game, the flowers were also something that stood the test of time without any further work (don’t run through them and they’ll stay just fine). Not anymore though, the flowers in the newest game require watering or they’ll dry up and disappear. This might not seem like that big of a deal at first, but keep a good amount of flowers around your town and you’ll be investing a decent amount of time watering them to keep them alive (unless your town happens to have alot of precipitation, then lucky you). If I wanted to be watering things I would go back to the Harvest Moon series, thanks.
  3. One town per Wii console – Another annoyance, only being able to create one town per Wii console. To make matters worse the save data cannot be transfered to a SD card either. Something that was atleast (somewhat) convenient (I guess) about the first game was being able to have a town per memory card. I had my town on one and my mom had a town on another card, easy stuff. Now if Nintendo let you create more than 1 town on the system it would be even easier these days, with no swapping memory cards, but alas…

All quirks aside, it’s the best Animal Crossing experience since the the original graced us with it’s presence 10 years ago. If you’re still considering buying it I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Until next rant my friends,

Riskening 2009 : A Retrospective

The new year is upon us and we should all be looking forward to the next and all it has to offer in entertainment…BUT let’s take a moment to look at the ups and downs of Riskening for the past year, shall we?

January -

My old hosting failed me. (Big surprise…NOT)

February -

CoD : WaW and the start of a beautiful thing… (aka Resident Evil 5 demo)

March -

The old host fails…AGAIN. (surprised yet?)

The Resident Evil 5 coverage begins! (teaming up with my cousin)

…and Continues! (eat it Wesker!)

Nintendo is starting to get the picture (maybe) that we need more space on the Wii than they give us. (how about some more online games too?)

April -

Starting to get excited about Terminator Salvation… (and not disappointed regardless of what the naysayers have to say)

The Anticipated List is starting to take form. (it’ll grow in due time)

The 360 fails by way of the dreaded e74! (and the PS3 gets a little extra lovin while he’s gone)

I give my 2 cents about what was missing from RE5. (still a great game though, I forgive you Capcom)

May -

Tacos at Midnight Doritos disappoint me. (if I wanted to eat some taco seasoning I would’ve just ripped open a bag and chugged some down)

Atleast the Red Dead Redemption trailer picked my spirits up. (and the new gameplay one is even more exciting)

We recieve some sad news about the development team at 3d Realms. (but DNF will push on and maybe we’ll actually be able to play it…someday)

I give my opinion about digital copies… (you know, those things that come with certain DVDs that I’m sure they charge you extra for AND that you have to use before a certain expiration date)

…and the new Eco-box craze. (here’s a hint, they suck)

Japan continues to make awesome commercials. (Oh Japan, you so crazy!)

What better way to celebrate Memorial day than with the first major Modern Warfare 2 trailer? (answer: it doesn’t get much better than that)

We learn a thing or two about game shipping precautions. (this has been a Riskening.com PSA)

The Terminator Salvation game, unlike the movie, disappoints me. (rushing licensed games out the door doesn’t pay, kids)

June -

Nazi Zombies postpones the new Anticipated List. (you win this time zombies!)

3d Realms continues to battle with it’s publisher Take-Two over Duke Nukem Forever. (FIGHT!)

The new look for Max Payne emerges…through several screenshots. (looking pretty scruffy man)

July -

We take a look at some of the latest and greatest titles in terms of Co-op play. (we’re in this together now)

The long overdue Anticipated series is underway at last. First up, Wii! (you know you want these games)

We learn a thing or two about stacking the dead. (in video games…of course)

Hey PS3! You’re up to the Anticipated stand. (bring on the exclusives)

August -

Nazi Zombies threatens the status of the Anticipated series AGAIN. (this time with a little help from Splosion Man)

The Anticipated List is starting to wind down…but not until we get through this feast of multiconsole goodies! (part 1)

September -

The Anticipated series goes out with a BANG! (and a heaping load of upcoming titles)

I try my hand at a DVDs of the week post. (maybe this will even become a regular thing someday?)

A suprisingly good week for us Co-op gamers comes along out of the blue. (it’s about time!)

October -

We took a little break. (hey, if I got paid for this I would be much more adament about keeping up with posts but alas…)

…until we get back into the swing of things with some of my favorite titles of the moment. (atleast my 21st birthday was this month too! :D …on the 21st may I add)

November -

I try to get back into DVD picks of the week again. (it was a nice try, right?)

The switch to a new web host begins at last! (and well overdue if you ask me)

…looks like things are going good on the new host, no? (even though it’s not hard to beat the old one)

December -

The Bayonetta demo astounds! (January’s looking to be a good one)

The DGM Wiki goes back online after much neglect. (sorry buddy, atleast you’re all upgraded and cleaned up now, right?)

An Animal Crossing Christmas greeting appears! (Awwww…)

…and there you have it! All the good (games and dvds), the bad (away time) and the ugly (hosting problems) of the year 2009.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

-from riskening.com, and have a safe and healthy one.
