A step in the right direction…

As part of their GDC (Game Developers Conference) presentation, Nintendo officially launched the Wii System Menu 4.0 update. The good news is that the console now supports running WiiWare off of an SD card and even new support for SDHC cards up to 32GB.

I was quite glad to see this progress because my biggest beef with the Wii before was the VERY limited onboard space and having to delete and reinstall channels just because I was running low on space between virtual console and WiiWare. This is still a far from perfect solution but it’s nice to see Nintendo taking atleast some action to this perdicament. I mean, if you’re going to keep offering all these WiiWare, virtual console, and add-on channel titles, maybe offer us atleast some sort of small hard drive (even if just optional). It wouldn’t effect console price much really and it would help out ALOT. But I digress…

The downside? (for those homebrew enabled)

With the latest update Nintendo has officially put a stop to the Twilight Hack for the Homebrew Channel. According to wiibrew.com, it is possible to run the channel from an SD card but the Homebrew Channel cannot be installed back on the Wii.

So homebrewers out there, don’t update your consoles just yet…
