Glitchy achievements! Oh my!

Filed under: World of Video Gaming — DGM-payne @ 11:26 pm

Something a bit strange happened last night while I was playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for XBLA. As you may have known (if you’ve been listening to me at all!), the new Order of Ecclesia came out recently and sparked up my interest to go back and dig up some more achievements for SOTN as well. I’ll try to keep this simple for those of you not so familiar with SOTN (shame on you). I finish the game in normal mode so I can unlock Richter Belmont and blast through the game as quickly as possible with him (since he WILL die quite easily, I found out too many times). This gives me the Belmont’s Revenge achievement. Then as soon as I finished with that I reloaded my normal file, to get the rest of the map uncovered (Seeker achievement), and as soon as the game starts…Familiar achievement pops up! But WAIT, I only had 4 out of 5 of the little buggers that follow you around and do stuff (familiars). So why did I mysteriously get this achievement so suddenly even after so many updates to the game? Who knows. I think it’s the first achievement I’ve recieved through a bug. I did eventually get the last familiar through my tedious scouring of the map, but it’s still a pretty crazy thing. All in all, now I’m finally 12 for 12 as far as SOTN achievements go.

If anyone else has any crazy achievement stories I’d love to hear them.

In other news, Red Alert 3 is out tomorrow! I have to wait for mine in the mail, but it should be worth it.

November is also on the horizon with all it’s bounties. More to come soon…

Now featuring a new post every week! (aka DVDs of October)

Did I mention I was lazy? Anyways, let’s continue…

I’m a bit of a DVD collector (probably quite an understatement), as many of you might be as well, so I’d like to start sharing my DVD picks of the month of October ’08.

Starting with those already released…

  1. Cult of Cartman : Revelations – 12 Cartman based episodes for the South Park fan in everyone, including classics such as “Scott Tenorman Must Die” and “AWESOM-O”. Somewhat pointless for anyone collecting the season box sets as the only difference here are introductions by cartman for each episode (his lessons, pretty funny though) and 3 previously unreleased on DVD episodes (which will be on the next box set). It’s still a good start for anyone else though. Extras include a collectible membership card and sticker as well as a bible-esque case (although original idea and looks spiffy, does not actually snap shut which can be kind of a pain).
  2. The Simpsons : The 11th Season – You either love the Simpsons or you don’t, and if you’ve been keeping up with the season releases at all like me you probably already heard about this one. Limited edition features a Krusty head this time since they’ve already blown through the Simpsons family. Also in this set (atleast the one I got) was a Simpsons Ride express pass for up to 4 people at either Universal. Wish I had it a couple months ago when I went to Universal Orlando, long ass line but atleast you can watch simpsons clips before and the ride itself was pretty sweet…recommended.
  3. Robot Chicken : Season 3 – Newcomer Robot Chicken a few years back has since become a mainstay over at Adult Swim, featuring the same bold stop-motion comedy you’ve come to love. Usual special features include deleted animatics and scenes, alternate audio, commentaries, etc. Speaking of Adult Swim though, anyone see those Williams Street County Fair and Expo commercials? Certain lucky bastards at certain universities around the US get to check it out. If you’ve been to one, tell me about the awesomeness please…you bastard.

And those coming out tomorrow…

  1. Family Guy : Volume 6 –  Freakin’ Sweet! This is another series that you’ve probably been collecting all of or nothing at all. Best Buy bonus is a lithograph for the 100th episode and Target has a signed script and poster thing, apparently. I think I’ll check out the Target version.
  2. The Incredible Hulk – What you could possibly need 3 discs for in a special edition movie is beyond me, but I’ll still be picking it up. The movie is on par with recent Marvel movies such as Iron Man and Edward Norton does a bang up job as Bruce Banner. Target has some sort of “tearing up a brick wall” edition with YET another disc (Making it 4, Wowee…COUNT ME IN!).

In other news, my first spam comment has been blocked on this site by Akismet. Oh Joy! Almost brings a tear to my eye.

Oh, and my birthday’s tomorrow! The big 2-OH!

Man, where does the time go…

In the words of my favorite anime, of which I just watched the movie for yet again today,

See you space cowboy!

Games and games and games…of October.

Hey everybody! Happy Columbus day to all of you.

Here’s the next edition of games of the month for October…let’s take a look at a few upcoming releases:

Dead Space (360 and PS3 – 10/14, PC – 10/20) – EA’s take on a sci-fi survival horrorish story. I haven’t been following this one too much, but it looks pretty neat based on what I have seen. Think Doom 3 atmosphere with a bit more horror game elements thrown in.

Wii Music (10/20) – Nintendo’s take on music games (like Rock Band) that have been oh so popular these days. Only they want you to get together with some friends and “improv” music for the pure joy of playing (There are no mistakes! They turn it into pretty music for you! Oh joy!). Featuring “60-plus” instruments and nintendo classics such as the Super Mario Bros. theme (of course). Other modes include playback, orchestra, tone quiz, and a virtual drum set.

Castlevania: The Order of Ecclesia (DS, 10/21) – I already covered this one a bit in one of my previous posts (as well as it’s fighting game counter-part, coming next month). I’m still pretty excited for this one.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS – 10/21, PC – 10/28) – New York City is invaded by a symbiote invasion and it’s all up to spidey to save the day. Also involved are the always foxy Black Cat (which I was checking out the screens on ebgames.com and all had her for some reason…?) and Wolverine (who I also caught a glimpse of in symbiote form today in a new trailer on xbox live), just to name a couple. Featuring a revamped combat system, red/black (symbiote) suit switching on the fly (even during battles to create combos), and a morality meter that your actions will effect whether you’re deemed hero or vigilante. I guess this will have to do until Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 comes out. I completely recommend the first one for 2-4 co-op play.

Legendary (360, PS3 – 10/21, PC – 11/4) – A shooter where you fight giant birds and other mythical beasts (or something…). Literally any apocalyptic happenings (those unleashed from Pandora’s Box) are fair game. Screens look pretty, but we’ll see. Moving on…

Fable 2 (360, 10/21) – I probably should have played the first one more but I guess it wasn’t really my cup of tea (for lack of a better phrase). The first one was quite well praised among RPG fans. I do respect the whole choices and consequences motif though, something you don’t see too often. I hear he has a new canine companion in the next installation too. Hmmmm…?

Far Cry  2 (PC, 360, PS3, 10/21) – Can’t say too much about this one because I haven’t even tried the first one yet, but I’ve heard good things.

Fallout 3 (PC, 360, PS3, 10/28) – A new take on 2 classic RPGs. Mmmmm…nuclear ravaged land. Next…

Red Alert 3 (PC – 10/28, 360 – 11/11) – Again, I covered this one in my earlier post. I watched another trailer on the 360 today that was a “remix” (or mash-up) of the all-star cast of characters for the cinematics, which also included George Takei saying the infamous All Your Base Are Belong To Us (wow…just wow). This is probably the title I’m most looking forward to this month. I’m just itching for some new RTS action and since Starcraft 2 is still well away, that just leaves…

(Disclaimer: The following has not been deemed worthy enough for a picture, Thank You for your cooperation)

Cesar Millan’s Dog Whisperer (PC, DS, 10/14) – I was looking through new releases on EB Games and found my serious WTF? moment of the month. Developed by Ubisoft, so maybe there’s some tactical/espionage factors involved with these dogs. C’mon guys.

Well, that about wraps up my main releases list of the month.

On a side note about the Wii though, I’m really starting to worry that Nintendo blew their load early this year. Sure, there’s Wii Music now and the new Animal Crossing and Castlevania game in about another month…but what other real worth while exclusives are coming before the end of the year? Please let me know if you find any because I’m at a lose right now.

Until next time,

Quick little update…

Where does the time go? Seriously…less than two weeks until my birthday and the time’s flying.

I’ll try to get my lazy ass to update more, but here’s a few things I plan on covering SOON (In no particular order FYI):

  • Finishing and tidying up site sections
  • October game releases (albeit November is the HOTTER month though)
  • A look at new DVD picks (let’s try it out)
  • Why Microsoft did not give us our new xbox live “experience” yet…? (or something else I feel like)

As for games, I’ve been pounding my way through Silent Hill Homecoming still and it’s quite growing on me the more I play. Since I’ve built my new PC I’ve had a bit of a Steam rebirth as well, and I’d like to recommend the Shadowgrounds games. Sure, they’re kind of short…but they’re cheap and a nice buy for the overhead view (ala Smash TV) shooter fans.

Oh, and if you haven’t yet, check out tonight’s new South Park episode. It’s delicious…

EDIT (10/9/08) : According to the first day Microsoft keynote at the Tokyo Game Show, the New Xbox Live Experience will be released worldwide on November 19th. A bit late in fall don’t you think, guys?
