Xbox Live’s upcoming facelift… (…and becoming more Wii-like)

Filed under: World of Video Gaming — DGM-payne @ 6:52 pm

If you have a Xbox Live account you’ve probably already heard about the upcoming update starting the 29th to 30th of this month…

New Xbox Experience

Go to “Welcome -> Express Yourself” and watch the video there to see what I’m talking about.

Looks like Microsoft’s taking a page from Nintendo’s Wii and going the personalized avatar route. Developed by the guys at Rare (Banjo-kazooie, Conker, Goldeneye), they look very much like Miis, no? “Enhanced” Mii…

Also seems that most of the changes are being done with the way friend networking goes down and this new “LIVE Party” thing they’re adding, playing with up to 8 friends.

Interesting, only a couple more days.

Update: Sorry, this maintenance was completely unrelated I guess. Microsoft hasn’t given an exact date for this update yet upcoming this fall. Bummer…

Second Edit (3/10/08): More new Marketplace screenshots

and still waiting for this new “Experience”.

Post-Woot-Off

Well, it’s about 2 days later and plenty of refurbs, earphones, ipod goods, etc. have passed, but I survived following my (nearly) whole first Woot-Off! For those of you who aren’t familiar, Woot does this about once a month and blasts through loads of products, eventually ending up at the ever popular Random Crap (bag of crap).

I lost quite a few hours of sleep and didn’t buy anything, my bank account’s a bit stressed right now, but it’s quite an experience in of itself (although sometimes tedious too) waiting for that elusive…crap. My first real chance to try and buy some of that crap was unfortunately shut out by server errors right away (the load apparently takes quite a heavy tole on them). Oh well, better luck next time I guess…

And what was the ending item for this Woot-Off?

Toilet Paper Dispenser /w FM Radio, nice touch. Grab it now for $5 + $5 shipping. Haha… 😀

And don’t forget to wipe when you’re done.

I also reccommend Shirt.Woot for your daily shirt needs. All designs are user submitted and collected in Derby competitions, most of the stuff is pretty sweet from talented artists. They also have a similar random shirt deal every once in awhile. Actually caught a couple of those once and was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Atleast I was also able to grab some Duke Nukem 3D on the XBLA last night (or should I say VERY early this morning). Anyone up for some duking it out? You know the username, hit me up.

September Wrap-up!

Filed under: World of Video Gaming — DGM-payne @ 11:58 pm

Happy first day of Fall to everyone! Yep, it’s officially here…

Since we’re also well into the last full week of September, I figured we should take a look at some of the releases upcoming before the end. No?

Batman and Robin to the rescue!

Batman and Robin to the rescue!

Lego Batman (Multi)Hitting stores tomorrow the 23rd – I’ve mentioned it before, I’m a HUGE lego fan and the past lego games have been nothing short of amazing for me. I’ll probably be picking up a 360 copy again (as with the past lego games) because I’m a bit of an achievement whore. It’ll also be available for just about everything else as well (Wii, ds, ps2, psp, ps3, pc…did I miss anything?).

Wii-raca!

Wii-raca!

Samba De Amigo (Wii)Also hitting stores tomorrow – Never played the original for Dreamcast, but I’ve heard good things. I’ve never been into music games too much, but I’ll try some here and there. I mean, this is the kind of stuff the Wii remote + Nunchuck’s motion sensors where designed for, right? No extra kinds of controllers necessary. Perfect. Of course, they also sell the aesthetic maraca attachments as well if you wanna go all out with it.

It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum...and I'm all outta gum!

Duke Nukem 3D (360)XBLA version the 24th – I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I’ve always been a Nukem fan and I’ll definately be grabbing this one on the arcade. You should too if you’re a Nukem fan at all, especially if you wanna get in on the multiplayer.

Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility (Wii)30th – To be quite honest, I haven’t been keeping up with the harvest moon games since around the time of the ps2 and gba releases. I’ve always been a fan of the series since the second game, released on the N64. Never got a chance to own the original snes version, and now it’s rare as hell. Atleast I can play it on my Wii 🙂 . Anyways, I’ve also noticed that about half the games released are just rehashes (especially the 2d ones), so I don’t feel too bad about not owning them all. I do feel that the 3d versions have been getting better and I might just have to check out the first to hit the Wii.

Silent Hill: Homecoming (360 and PS3)30th – I’m first and foremost a true Resident Evil fan, but the Silent Hill series also holds a special place for me. That’s why I really hope the new team did a good job on this. Promising an all new combat system (featuring attacks and counters) and more history behind the town, they have big shoes to fill. Also the first Silent Hill to hit the next-gen consoles. I was glad to hear atleast that Akira Yamaoka would be returning to compose the soundtrack again. The man did an awesome with the past games. I also hear Pyramid Head is back as well, which is pretty nice in of itself. I’ll be picking this one up for the 360 since I don’t even have a PS3 yet 😐 .

That’s about all I wanted to cover…oh, and a new Wario game hit stores today for the Wii. It’s no Warioware but I might just check it out.

With the holiday season upcoming though, plenty more awesome games are on the horizon…

In other (kinda) related news, commercials for the Max Payne movie are starting to play. Hitting theatres October 17th, a few days before my birthday, I hope it doesn’t disappoint me TOO much (Who knows? It MIGHT even be half decent…). I wouldn’t want my Max Payne fan heart broken. More news on the movie later hopefully.

Until next time,

Duke Nukem is almost back!

Filed under: World of Video Gaming — DGM-payne @ 5:28 pm

No, not Duke Nukem Forever. Although that would be amazing and I would have probably already creamed my pants if it were true.

According to a recent official announcement by 3D Realms this monday, the new port of Duke Nukem 3D to the Xbox Live Arcade is only t-minus exactly 1 week away.

Mark your calenders, September 24th!

Like to see the recent trailer that hit Gametrailers? You betcha…

And no, it’s not JUST a port. Sure, it’s got all the usual achievements and leaderboards and blah, blah, blah of XBLA games…but there’s MORE! 8-player co-op and dukematch (deathmatch), gameplay clips that can be uploaded for speedruns, etc. and a “Tivo-style” rewind feature for after you die (shown in the trailer).

For a full list of features, achievements, screenshots and other info: Official site is HERE.

I’m uber excited for this release, as any Duke fan should be. Especially after a few weeks of shitty XBLA releases that did not catch my interest at all.

And all that jazz…

Sorry about the lack of updates recently, but I guess I’ve been busy breaking in my new PC, getting used to Vista again and drooling at games that run soooooo smoothly even maxed out and resolution cranked up (which I hadn’t been able to do on my old ‘puters). My brother built it for me on friday night (right after I finally got everything) since he’s got the experience with hardware that I’m lacking. In addition, my bro’s stag was saturday night and I had to help move some furniture on sunday…so it was a bit of a busy weekend.

Woah…and it’s wedsnesday already? Damn, time DOES fly.

Overall, things are going pretty smoothly with the new PC. Just hit a bit of a snag yesterday though, because of Vista updates only. The night of putting together that PC I also updated Vista fully (took a hell of a long time, but did it). In April, there was an “important update” (also required for service pack 1) that apparently caused some screwy results with usb ports in some computers. It was mostly a mouse and other controlling device problem that would cause them to not be recognized by Vista. I wanted to use my new Razer Diamondback 3G instead of a shitty mouse I used when we first plugged in my beast, and I knew it wasn’t a driver problem because I tested the mouse on the family computer (which also uses Vista). After doing some searching about the update online I finally found that solution. Luckily I was able to get my new mouse working and recognized, but having to go that round about way to “hack” it is fucking rediculous to begin with.

I guess that’s just microsoft’s way…ya’know?  *sigh* 😐

I’ll try to get around to the Projects and finishing About Me sections…ASAP. Maybe update WordPress as well (although it feels like I just did that already :/ ).

Anyways, I feel satisfially (is that a word…? It wasn’t underlined in red, so it must be A OK. :D) ranted out for now.

Until next time,

– DGM-payne
